A Week Among the 4.507034%

This has been another busy week. Monday saw the launch of STS-125 from the Johnson Space Center Building 2. Wednesday saw the docking with Hublle Space Telescope from Mission Control. Both Wednesday and Thursday had an opportunity to meet with the members of Expedition 19, Sandra Magnus and Mike Fincke. They showed some incredible HD video of the mission, also the STS-119 and STS-126 missions that visited while they were aboard ISS. Thursday was privileged to meet former Shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale, who was please that I ride a motorcycle. During lunch I often go over to Mission Control, especially during EVA's. More photos coming soon.

Not to be forgotten, both Herschel and Planck launched together this week. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) measures the proportion of baryonic matter at 4.4 +/- 0.3%. Planck should narrow that down to +/- 0.1%, closer to the prediction of 4.507034%.

The old inflationary paradigm predicts that the Universe is flat, like Earth. Temperature fluctuations should be the same at all scales. Both predecessor spacecraft, COBE and WMAP show that fluctuations are zero beyond 60 degrees. This shows that the Universe is spherical as certainly as a ship's sails disappearing over the horizon. Inflation's prediction is ruled out by both COBE and WMAP.

The Hubble, now under repair, shows that either the universe is accelerating OR that the speed of light slows down. So far the former interpretation gets discussed everywhere but the latter seems nearly ignored. Shiny new instruments are great, but when will humans learn to interpret what is around them?

It is sad that you need to show this graph again and again, year after year. It really is not so difficult to see that the Dark Force doesn't fit the data.

Perhaps you should include experimental error bars for the WMAP and COBE data. How can you possibly claim that the theoretical curve doesn't fit the experimental data without them?

HI Kea: Having thouggvht about the problem, I've concluded that scientists accept LCDM because there are no well-known alternatives. There is at least one alternative, but that one has great difficulty getting into refereed journals. The word is slowly getting out there, and bloggers help a lot.

Hi Louise,

The 'theoretical' curve on the graph is the prediction of Alan Guth's theory of inflation, right?

Your point is that inflation doesn't predict the density fluctuations of the universe at 400,000 years when the cosmic microwave background originated?

I agree stongly that inflation is wrong. I wonder if you have a statement anywhere of exactly how the varying velocity of light produces uniform distribution of matter across wide angles of sky (over 60 degres) at 400,000 years after the big bang?

As you know, I accept that there is substance in GM = tc^3 relationship, but I challenge the idea that c varies to compensate for the variation of t while GM remain fixed. From the point of view of quantum gravity (I'm rewriting my paper on this to make it clearer), the only variables in the equation are G and t, so G increases in proportion to t. Normally this is ruled out along with Dirac's hypothesis (Dirac guessed that G is inversely proportional to t) by Teller's 1948 argument that if G varies, the compression in the big bang and in stars would vary fusion rates, affecting the abundance of elements from the big bang and the thermal history of the sun in the distant past. But if quantum gravity is unified with electromagnetism (which Teller ignored), both the strength of Coulomb repulsion of protons in fusion processes and the strength of gravitational attraction (compression) vary in the same way and offset one another, totally negating Teller's argument and allowing fusion to be unhindered by a variation in G.

My argument is that the universe at 400,000 years has uniform density on large scales because gravity strength G was 400,000/13,700,000,000 = 0.03 of what it is today. That gravity was then only 3% of what it is today, prevented the clumping and kept the expanding universe very uniform until it started to age and G increased. This is how I get rid of inflation.

However, I'd like to understand your argument so I can compare in detail all predictions to COBE and WMAP observations of density fluctuations.

HI nige: Your thoughtful comment deserves a long response, which I will try to give.

The inflationary paradigm claims that the early Univers expanded to a tiny sphere to enormous size. Our part of the Universe would be flat, like the Earth.

Density fluctuations would be the same at all scales. If you have a graphing calculator, just program a series of sine waves of wavelength from near zero to near infinity. You will get a graph similiar to the inflated prediction.

If the Universe is curved with radius R = ct, the largest possible density fluctuation has peak-trough length of 180 degrees. Program that in a computer and you will get a curve that precisely matches COBE and WMAP.

This reply does not do justice to the problemk, but I appreciate your abd Kea's remarks.

Hello Mrs. Riofrio,

I have several questions about your proposed model with a changing speed of light. Already several weeks ago, I sent you an e-mail (to the address given in one of your papers), but did not receive a reply so far. Could you please tell me how I can contact you? (writing all my questions as comments on blog posts would be rather cumbersome - I'd prefer e-mail...)

For bjoern: I get a lot of email and yours must have been lost in the shuffle. Please leave your email address and I will reply.
